Music is (also) therapy for me. That is one big reason to improvise for me: I bypass the self, giving the subconscious the chance to present me with the material that I do not like to deal with. When I get wiser, I'll start to listen. At first I thought this song was about being stuck in a wall of depression around me, with the little voice inside (heard it?) telling me to hold on. But after listening a few times in a row it seemed there was another layer. The sound of horror inside of me as to the state of apathy of humankind in the face of extinction, wrestling itself free from my mouth. Yes, I know, not now and by all means not necessarily a complete wipe-out, but a collapse of society is certainly in the cards. Nobody wants their kids, grandchildren, to be caught up in a world in flames. What can we do, is there something we can do (yes), let somebody else go first, the government, the multinationals. Yes, yes, yes, true, agreed, but, but, I feel like referring to the title of the album here. We won't get anywhere without inner action because we keep underestimating the seriousness of the trouble ahead and we need to face it. This action is not going to come from people who live on the brink of being able to sustain themselves. They are not the problem in the first place with their small ecological footprint and secondly they have other things on their mind. It has to come from the affluent, the over-consumers, the denialists, the conspiracy theorists, the.... well, from us. We live in interesting times and must live up to the challenge. This can still be a happy time, because we really don't need all that stuff, the plane travel and the big SUV to make us feel good. We need purpose and by god, we have purpose in life right now up to our necks. What I heard at the very end of this song: humor and good humour is going to see us through and guarantee a good life for our descendants. Why do I believe we will be happy? Just think back, I was just talking about depression and yet. Yet! I am a very happy musician doing what he loves the most. Please ask yourself, what is my purpose?
This album is such a joy to listen to. It tickles my ear and my brain. Some of the recordings take some getting used to, but that is actually a good sign. Little chance this music gets boring. Harry Lieben
