about

From the moment I first heard overtone singing, I was fascinated with the -for most people- unknown possibilities of the human voice as an instrument. For years I have improved my skill in overtone singing and -more in general- the enlargement of my vocal reach. With vocal reach I do not mean only how high and how low I can sing, but of course this is a part of it. I sat down this morning behind the microphone with the primary goal to hear how low I could sing and still be able to produce overtone melodies for the unbiased ear. Beside sometimes two or even three overtone melodies there are a lot of harmonics which "simply" follow the fundamental note. I put "simple" between brackets here, since it DOES require specific effort on my part to amplify them individually. You could say that I am both choir and two to three soloists, all at the same time. The spectrogram in the film clip youtu.be/eSe-FgtA3BU shows all the targeted overtones and the fundamental all the way at the bottom. This fundamental is initially 65Hz (C2). At 6:15 I liberate myself from the effort to sing as low as possible and shift to a slightly higher, easier to maintain pitch. This makes it easier for me to concentrate on the overtones. This is an analysis in hindsight. I sing because it is good for me, for my soul and because it is such a sweet challenge to find the peace in myself to sing a song that consists of only one, often barely perceptible fundamental note and is so rich in natural harmonics and overtones.

The first instrument of man is the voice. The first amplifier, a cave. For a caveman, there is no middle of the road.
