about

"The Lost Chord" is the aim of this quest It's a short piece of overtone singing, heard in a documentary more than 20years ago. What is this sound, how can a human voice sound like that.... The most beautiful sound ever and it was gone! Search for the origin led nowhere. It was not on the DVD and the documentary maker wrote that the artist had objected against his unauthorized use of the song. Had to do it myself, right? Never got real close until recently in a fit of feverish creativity, wrought the haunting overtones on deep fundamental. Very similar, just have to find the exact right tension or rather relaxation of all the soft reverberating bits incorporated and the right amount of breathing wind. Let's try again and record for interpretation. Here we go. Very close now, careful, only small steps. So close, not there, other overtone? more volume? Sounds good but.... not the Lost Chord. Not happening.....resignation and relaxation of the vocal chords. And then it suddenly happens, at 6:30 at the end of what I call a sentence (one exhalation), at his point somewhat exasperated about not getting there, a glissando escaping me going north and south all over the place. Not the Lost Chord, but a perfect little gem nonetheless. I believe I am done with looking out for this Lost Chord. It will find me and so will all the ones that I am not looking for as well.

Making this recording was not about making a song, but experimenting with my voice to find this beautiful sound that I am writing about so passionately. I was not holding back and so there are some strange unmusical noises. Which I do not accept any more for a song to be put on air. I might have to rethink that, because upon listening back the recording, I had to admit it is amongst the finest I ever have sung. Even when leaving the haunting higher overtones aside, there is so much loveliness going on in the lower registers..... I do not posses the editing skills to remove the sighing growls and slightly excessive reverberations in some parts of the recording and so they will remain forever a part of this song.
